More and more workers are negotiating their job offers
More and more workers are negotiating their job offersMore and more workers are negotiating their job offersFifty-five percent of professionals asked for a higher salary the last time they got a job offer, a 16-point increase over a similar survey from last year, according to new research from staffing firm Robert Half. Finally, workers are breaking the trend that the majority dont negotiate over salary. (In February 2018, Robert Half found that 61% didnt negotiate a job offer, and a 2018 ZipRecruiter Annual Job Survey from December 2018 found that only 36% negotiated salary with a job offer). Its a tight labor market, as job seekers are hearing again and again, and perhaps thats making them bolder.Smart companies realize that winning over top candidates often comes down to moving quickly on hiring decisions and presenting a compensation and perks package thats at least on par with the competition, saidPaul McDonald, senior executive director for Robert Half.Men and younger workers we re the most likely to request more pay (ladies, get in there but as everyone knows, men and women negotiate differently.)Amongst professionals in the 28 U.S. cities polled, Miami, San Diego, and San Francisco all attempted to negotiate their salary the most. Minneapolis, Philadelphia, and Cleveland tried the least.Ask for moreDont be shy about asking for more managers are waiting for you to do it. Seventy percent of senior managers said they fully expected some pushback on the initial salary offered. About 62% of managers are more open to negotiating compensation as well as nonmonetary perks (like flexible time) and benefits (59%) than they were even a year ago.And if youre a worker with specialized skills, youve got even better chances at the negotiating table, from salary to perks.Job seekers with specialized skills are in high demand and may even be entertaining multiple offers, saidMcDonald. With the odds in their favor, its little wonder more professionals are comfortable nego tiating not only salary but also nonmonetary benefits, such as vacation days, flexible schedules and professional development.

Smart weekend rituals to make your workweek less anxious
Smart weekend rituals to make yur workweek less anxiousSmart weekend rituals to make your workweek less anxiousA classic weekend spent lounging around the house and meeting with family can be the gift we all deserve after a long week. But it always feels like the weekend is over way too soon, and we spend the next week scrambling to catch up on the things we stepped away from. That creates its own anxiety, and we like to avoid unnecessary anxiety around here. Here are a few things you can do to get ahead before Monday comes around.Write down your weekly goals and limit them to only six thingsJames Clear writes about the Ivy Lee method- reportedly used by Charles M. Schwab after meeting with the productivity consultant in the early 1900s- which can also be applied to planning on the weekend.Clear includes a step-by-step numbered list, starting with at the end of each work day, write down the six fruchtwein important things you need to accomplish tomorrow. Do not write down mora than s ix tasks. The second is, prioritize those six items in order of their true importance, and the third is when you arrive tomorrow, concentrate only on the first task. Work until the first task is finished before moving on to the second task. The fourth step involves doing the same thing for the rest of the list, and when you make tomorrows list of six items at the end of the work day, include the ones you didnt complete that day. The fifth and final step is to use this method every working day.Give batching a tryWhen it comes to your to-do list, you could also try planning to do things that are alike within the same time period.Paul Jarvis writes about batching in an article for The Musecalled4 Ways to Focus When Your Minds Not in the Mood.Batching builds off the idea of only working on one kind of task at a time. Rather that jumping from one project to another, you do all related tasks in a set amount of time. By batching the work you have to accomplish, you dont have to constantly s hift gears. So, grouping all the writing I have to do into a morning means I can write five to six articles in one fell swoop. Perfect. Then Ill typically spend the afternoon programming websites for clients, moving my brain into that mode for hours at a time, Jarvis writes.Similarly, some organizational plans recommend that you list your tasks by where you will be taking care of them a list of home tasks, computer tasks, office tasks, and so on. Working that way lets your brain function more smoothly since things are categorized together.Dont obsess over what hasnt worked out for youIts natural to spend Sundays thinking not only about the week ahead, but also what we screwed up the week before and how to fix it. One thing to note the more we think about something, the more we attract the emotions around it into our minds and our lives. So if youre dwelling on negative emotions, youll feel even more negative emotions.Martha Beck writes about the law of attracting Trojan horses in an article. She advises anyone who is worried about a situation to rewrite the story of what is happening. We often prepare ourselves for the worst possible outcomes by linking together different incidents into one big, negative story that we use to torture ourselves.Becks advice just stop telling yourself that story.Ive binnenseen that what were most afraid to lose is never a thing, person, or situation, but our story about how that thing will make us happy, conform to our egos desires, and remain forever unchanging. This is true even when the thing is our own body. 5 Essential Steps to Get Ahead
5 Essential Steps to Get Ahead 5 Essential Steps to Get Ahead During my 50-year global career, I saw engineers with the broadest range of talents get promoted faster and move farther in their organizations. With each promotion, a young engineer would have fewer engineering responsibilities and more management tasks, requiring people skills for which most engineers have little training.Id like to suggest five essential steps for getting ahead as an engineer.1) IntegrityMy father lost his job in the middle of the Depression because he would not help steal oil from the owner of the pumping station where he worked. Pumps were taking suction out of the same tank that oil welches flowing into. After he alerted the owner, my father was fired for being honest.Warren Buffett looks for three things in hiring people The first is personal integrity. The second is intelligence. The third is high energy level. But if you dont have the first, the other two will kill you. Integrity is an inside job the intersection of what we think (beliefs and values), do, and say to others. Its built over time, one step at a time. Integrity matters because its necessary for trust, the crucial factor in personal and professional relationships. The more trustworthy we become, the more trustworthiness we inspire in others.2) ReputationA reputation grows steadily, day by day, year by year, over a lifetime. But in merely a moment, it can be severely damaged, by inappropriate behavior. Your reputation will always follow you.Our industry is small word gets around. Everything you say and do, both inside and outside your organization, creates your image. To many people, someones word transcends anything put in writing. Have a good reputationand keep it.3) PassionToday, work defines us. When we meet someone, we usually ask, what do you do? even before, where are you from?People accomplish more when they love their work. Have you ever seen an athlete win when no one had given her a chance? That motiva tion and peak wertmiger zuwachs is fueled by love of the sport. Focus on the most stimulating parts of your job. Seek responsibilities that highlight them.4) People SkillsA senior executive from a major oil company told me that engineers not selected for promotion there were technically very competent. But they didnt communicate effectively, manage people comfortably, or get along well with colleagues and co-workers.Ive observed that people with only technical skills reach a plateau in their careers, and stay there, unless they also have people skills. You can hone yours through classes, webinars, or popular books about unterstellung abilities.5) ListeningI once asked a Spanish oil executive about a plaque on his desk. He said it epitomized his life history, and translated it Everything has been said, but since no one listened, I must start over again.Technical people cant afford to be poor listeners. How we do our jobs and get along with others is greatly influenced by how well we listen. Thats because a speakers words unconsciously reflect inner feelings, idiosyncrasies, preconceptions, assumptions, background, and prejudices.Yes, listening requires effort. To be a better listenerPay attention. Put the speakers needs first.Be empathetic and responsive.Look at the speaker.Listen for ideas, but dont judge.Ask clarifying or follow-up questions, which also shows that youre listening. In 1968, I worked on a large project in the Soviet Union. Presidents of other involved firms led the discussions. On my flight back to London (where I lived), one of those company presidents was seated next to me. I asked a question about his career, then asked where he grew up. For the next 3.5 hours, I made occasional comments, but mostly posed questions, listening intently to his replies. At lunch a week later, his London manager told me that his president said I was the best conversationalist hed ever metAs you consider whether you can apply these suggestions, please remember The road to success is always under construction.Adapted from Enhancing Your Engineering Career, by James R. Basically, I Can Take Practically Any Job.
Basically, I Can Take Practically Any Job.Basically, I Can Take Practically Any Job.Since Im in sales, I can do pretty much any sales job in any industry.Really? Lets slow down and think about that one, because when youre in the midst of job search, its important to focus in order to find what you love.Where do you really excel? As an individual contributor who can come into a territory, find the customers, engage them, and expand their accounts month after month and year after year?Perhaps your history shows youre great when it comes to building the sales team, training them, motivating them, and providing leadership that captures awards and top rankings over and over.Maybe you have the personality type that truly enjoys consulting with the customer over the long term, taking a deep dive into their business, offering a customized solution, then serving as a freund with them to ensure their success. Those roles are different. And, I promise you, you only LOVE one of them. Theres a dif ference between landing any job and getting into that role you really want, where they value you, and where you know youll thrive. So lets talk about how to get there.Write your resume exactly 1 time.Too often what happens is candidates have multiple versions of their resume, or multiple iterations because it seems like you needed to adjust your story a few times. But the story doesnt need to be adjusted if it centers on 3 things who you are, what you do, and the value you bring. The problem lies in not believing your story is strong enough. It is, though, when its authentic to YOU.Dont aggravate yourself or burn yourself out in your job search, by re-writing your resume every 2 weeks. Its not the resume that needs to be re-written. Rather, its what youre doing to conduct your job search that likely needs to be re-shaped.Change your relationship with the job boards.Im going to bottom-line this one for you if your job search consists nearly 100% of applying to jobs online, then well se e you in that new job in about 2 years. What you need to understand is that job boards are, literally, where 98% of your competition is.Particularly if youre an experienced candidate or of a mature age, the job boards amount to nothing mora than black holes. Youre getting sucked into the vortex of being repeatedly ignored and / or rejected because the ATS is kicking your resume out. Or if a human being is seeing your resume, theyre doing the quick math about your age, and moving on to the younger, hotter model. The more strategic approach is to leverage the job boards to find out who is hiring, then make your approach directly.Oh yeah, so, make your approach directly.Perhaps youve heard of this fancy new place called LinkedIn. There you will find the human resource specialists, recruiters, and decision makers for virtually every company youd ever want to work for.Identify the specific job opportunity, identify the relevant person, and send an inbox or InMail. This entire method only w orks when you focus in on what you want. Any job really wont do. Specifics matter. Theres nothing specific about throwing spaghetti onto the wall and just seeing what sticks. While focusing may seem counterintuitive because youre not going for every opportunity under the sun, focusing allows you to zero in on the opportunity, zero in on your value, and go directly for the win.Im presenting a full online master class on how to win the job you really want in half the time. 5 Secrets Smart Jobseekers Age 50+ Know That Make The Job Search EASY shows you EXACTLY what to do to get your resume past the ATS, and how to find and talk to virtually any decision maker you need immediately Make sure to register today.

The goal is to meet the right people, build relationships, and become part of the community. If new graduates can demonstrate their ability, they graduates can be good hires - especially if you have someone in place to mentor them, Yusupova says. For each of our metro areas, we search within the market, which helps us build a strong network and referral base. Our recruiters for web development dont handle anything else, so their technical knowledge is really strong. How to Interview Web DevelopersCandidates should be tested on their problem-solving ability and knowledge of which technologies to apply to a given challengeInterpersonal skills and the candidates matching the company and/or IT department are best assessed in the interview processRecruiter TipsThe interview is really about sitting down and asking the candidate detailed questions about specific projects theyve worked on, says Boulos. Which technologies the individual candidate used for what purposes, and so on. We also consider how much traffic their web site gets, and who uses it.Ultimately you may have to hire a consultant to do the technical screening, to check candidates skill levels, says Yusupova. How to Close the DealHighly-talented web developers often care the most about the projects they work on, rather than earning top dollar or opportunities to quickly move up in the organizationEmployers can often gain a lot of good will - and work product - from candidates and employees by offering them workplace flexibilityRecruiter TipEveryone is different, says Yusupova.
